Let’s take a trip to Greymouth, the gateway to one of the most exciting parts of the South Island.
Greymouth is famous because of the TranzAlpine Railway, which takes travellers from Christchurch to Greymouth and vice versa. You’ll travel through the South Alps, past the Staircase Viaduct, and so many more incredible places. But, arriving at Greymouth is always exciting because of the rich history within the town, which you’ll learn all about now that you’re here.
Greymouth is a great base to have for domestic travels. Hire a car from Ace Greymouth and have the natural wonderland of the South Island at your fingertips. Stay a while in the town and learn about the history here, before taking on the Tranz-Alpine route for yourself in your rental car, with Ace.
Greymouth is an exciting town that is waiting to be discovered.
Go back in time and learn about the area's history by visiting the Shantytown close by. Located just ten kilometres outside of Greymouth, the Shantytown is one of the best heritage-based tourist attractions in the country. The gold rush of New Zealand began in Greymouth after the discovery of gold in Taramakau Valley in 1864. So this site is an incredible place to learn about the history and importance of the gold rush in the local area and country in general and about what it was like to live here in the 19th century. It does this by explaining how New Zealand came to be what it is today, and the impact colonisation had on the population in Greymouth.
Once you’ve stepped back into the modern world, perhaps some outside activity will be the right idea. Drive across to Rapahoe Beach and head on the two-hour Point Elizabeth Walk. If the weather is fair, perhaps bring your swimsuit, as Rapahoe Beach and several other spots are great places for a summer swim. There are several points to stop, admire the view, and learn about the history here while walking, like headlands, native bushland, and old gold mining sites.
Once you’ve finished learning the history and heritage of Greymouth, why not indulge yourself in the local culture. Monteith’s Brewery is the best place to end the day. A local legend, Monteith’s attracts local, domestic, and international travellers daily to taste award-winning beer, relax and unwind in a great local treasure. If you are tasting beers, do so responsibly, and have a designated driver drive your Ace rental back to your accommodation.
You could always drive the TranzAlpine route instead of taking the train.
This would be one of the most incredible road trips you could experience, as the Great Alpine Highway is known for its sheer beauty and expansive views. Drive through the formidable Arthurs Pass and see the Canterbury Plains, Southern Alps, and more as you head along one of the best road trips in the world. If you have the time, we’d recommend it - you won’t see views like this elsewhere in the world.
