Your Dunedin Destination Guide

Slow it down with a trip to the Botanic Gardens

If you’re an avid traveller you have probably seen some botanic gardens in your time. However, this is so much more than a few pretty flowers and trees. These massive gardens could be your backdrop for a full day as you explore everything it has to offer. Enjoy a one hour walk up an extinct volcano, visit the aviary and chat to the birds, gaze at the statues or wander among the trees on a series of easy, medium and hard trails. There’s a café on site if all that walking brings about an appetite, but we’d much prefer a nice picnic spread on the grass.

Get a glimpse or rare wildlife

There are plenty of animals to see in this region of NZ from penguins and sea lions to albatross and seals. If you’re hoping to get a look on your own, go for a stroll along the beach. Your best bets are heading along the Otago Peninsula. If you’re not having much luck, there are a range of wildlife tours given by guides who know exactly where to look.

Pump those legs

If your legs can handle a bit more punishment, hire a bike and go for a ride. There are plenty of trails to choose from that will give you exquisite views of the city. For those who prefer a gentler ride, the compact city offers flat runs to enjoy. If you’re serious about your cycling or mountain biking, you can kick it up a notch and explore the trails in the surrounding countryside. We recommend Signal Hill; it’s approximately a 40-minute ride from the city, offering incredible views of the city and a downhill track that must be experienced.

Just walk

They say the best things in life are free, and that’s certainly true in this gorgeous city. Put on those comfortable shoes and simply explore on foot. You’re sure to find something amazing to catch your eye on every corner. Trust us, even the train station is spectacular.

From the extraordinary Victorian and Edwardian architecture to beautiful gardens and great places to eat, a walk around Dunedin will have you set for the day. If you’re looking for a bit more structure, there are walking trails to give you a bit more direction. We recommend the street art walk, which takes around 90 minutes and features a series of impressive art works on massive walls. You can pick up the trail map at an i-SITE Visitor Information Centre or take part in a guided tour.

Check out one of the world’s steepest residential streets

Baldwin street is a must see for tourists. It’s seriously steep and was recognised by the Guinness World Records for over a decade as the steepest street before being taken over in 2019. While it’s not technically the steepest anymore, it’s still a great addition to itineraries. Race your friends or kids to the top and prepare yourself for that burn in your calves.

A much-loved tradition for many years was the yearly Jaffa race, which attracted massive crowds to launch a sea of chocolate racers. Bring along a packet of Jaffas and recreate the race yourself.

No matter where you end up, you’re sure to fall in love with the charm and beauty of Dunedin.

The boutique city of Dunedin is always a fantastic holiday destination. Set in and around a volcanic crater, this city is as unique as it is beautiful. Drive around the city and see for yourself the coastal areas that overlook the Pacific ocean, bushland walks, and rolling hills.

Dunedin can get cold as it’s one of the southernmost points in New Zealand, and even in the summer months has a cool chill. Bear this in mind when packing, and always keep a spare jumper in your Ace rental car.

Explore Dunedin City with Ace

Dunedin has lots of history and culture, so there is always something new to see, discover, and explore.

As one of New Zealand’s first three cities, Dunedin is home to some of the finest Victorian and Edwardian architecture in the Southern Hemisphere. Drive the streets to spot everything, from ornate stone architecture to gothic church spirals. This city is a beautiful little corner of the world.

Dunedin is home to some true literary heroes, so it makes sense that it’s the only UNESCO Creative City of Literature in New Zealand. Learn all about it as you drive through the city. Perhaps stop off on the Dunedin Writers Walk to go more in-depth about the history here. Afterwards, Otago Museum and the Toitu Otago Early Settlers Museum are fantastic spots to learn more about the area.

Finally, learn about the city’s links with China at the Dunedin Chinese Gardens. Not only does this give a fascinating insight into the two country’s links, but it’s pretty beautiful to look at too.

Don’t forget to try out the local food here. There are plenty of great restaurants and eateries in Dunedin, like The Press Club, a luxury restaurant perfect for a final night in the city. Alternatively, the 1908 Cafe Restaurant or the Titi Restaurant overlooks the ocean.

Explore the South Island with Ace

The natural beauty in this area of the South Island cannot be underestimated.

Drive east towards Invercargill to discover the Catlins. Invercargill is about two and a half hours drive from Dunedin, but the area between the two is one of the best-kept secrets of New Zealand. Perfect for those wanting to get off the beaten track, you can escape the crowds commonly found at the tourist hotspots, and instead enjoy untouched beauty. Stop by Kaka Point and Nugget Lighthouse which is a picturesque swim spot that you’ll not want to leave in a hurry. Purakaunui Falls are well worth a visit, with a short bushwalk exposing beautiful waterfalls. Finally, Purakaunui Bay has white sand and blue ocean water, so bring your swimsuit and enjoy.

Further afield is the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown. It’s a three and a half-hour drive from Dunedin, so perhaps book a night in the city to truly make the most of your trip. There are ample sights to see on the way there too, with the Otago region providing plenty of picturesque stops. Home to a huge range of adrenaline-filled activities, Queenstown is a fantastic town for all the family – bring your sense of fun and adventure and enjoy.

We know that you’ll love Dunedin. Stay and enjoy all this unique city has to offer, before heading off on a fantastic road trip or two around the South Island - there are some beautiful spots just a short drive away. We know that whatever you do in Dunedin, you’ll have a fantastic time in your Ace rental car.
