Christchurch is an incredibly cool city. Read on to find out why.
Christchurch is one of five cities in the world that is a gateway to Antarctica. It shows this through the International Antarctic Centre. Discover incredible facts, see beautiful sights, and immerse yourself in a notoriously unknown world. It’s conveniently located right next to the airport, so it could be your first visit while you’re in the city.
As well as being a gateway to a mystical realm, Christchurch is also cool because of its art and culture scene. Lining many street walls is fantastic street art. The city has a well-deserved reputation as the home of street art, so take note of all the masterpieces that adorn the city walls. The inside art is also a firm feature here: the Art Box Gallery and the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu are a must-do if you have an interest.
When night falls, the city yet again becomes even cooler. This is when Christchurch comes alive, with a thriving music scene taking centre stage. Head into any restaurant or bar and you’ll find yourself dancing the night away to live jazz, soul, and other great genres. It’s a fantastic city just to come and unwind.
Christchurch is in an unbeatable location for some epic South Island road trips.
A two and a half-hour drive away is Kaikoura. Known for its beautiful wildlife, a must-do activity here is either a boat tour or a swim in the ocean with some of the inhabitants here. It’s not uncommon to spot orca, dolphins, humpbacks, and even sperm whales in the waters, so keep an eye out whenever you’re near the big blue.
There’s also Lake Tekapo, just a three-hour trip away. Here, Mount John sits next to the beautifully blue lake - it’s truly out of this world. Stay the night and watch the stars: this area is one of the best in the world to stargaze. Closeby is the mighty Mount Cook, another must-do if you’re in the area as it’s easily one of the best sights to see on the South Island.
