The Link Pathway
Location: Picton to the Whenuanui Bay Lookout
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes one way
Experience Level: Easy
This trail is one of the newest additions to Picton’s hiking collection, and sees you strolling through the gorgeous forests of the Whenuanui Bay Scenic Reserve. The reward at the end of this trek is the stunning views looking out over the Queen Charlotte Sound.
Humphries Dam
Location: Esson’s Valley
Duration: 2 hours return
Experience Level: Easy
If you’re not tired of looking at water (because goodness knows, New Zealand has a lot of it!), head to Esson’s Valley just beyond Picton to discover the track to Humphries Dam. The walk takes you through native forest along the way until you eventually arrive at the picnic area alongside the dam itself.
Picton to Waikawa Track
Location: Picton/Waikawa
Duration: 50 minutes one way
Experience Level: Moderate
Starting from Picton Marina, this walking and cycling track takes you over to Waikawa Marina, promising some excellent views along the way. Once at the other end, make sure to take a look at the Waikawa Foreshore Reserve for a relaxing spot by the marina with picnic and toilet facilities available.
Hilltop View (Tirohanga Track)
Location: Picton
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Experience Level: Moderate – hard
For the most commanding views of Picton, you can’t go passed the Tirohanga Track. As the name might suggest, you’re going to have to slog up a fairly steep track to reach the summit, but trust us, the views are well worth the sweat and tears. Just picture being treated to panoramic views of Waikawa, Picton and the mesmerising Queen Charlotte Sound.
