A quick guide to: Christchurch
Christchurch, the largest city in New Zealand’s South Island, is also one of its most beautiful. This is perhaps why it has been given the affectionate nickname ‘The Garden City’.
Let’s take a look some quick facts about one of the country’s favourite holiday hotspots.
Christchurch at a glance
We challenge you to find somewhere else in the world where you can sky dive, bungy jump, ski on a world-renowned alpine resort, play golf, explore an international Antarctic centre, watch whales in their natural habitat and even go on a mountain biking adventure – all within close proximity to a major international airport.
Christchurch didn’t just accept being hit by a major earthquake in 2010, it rose to the challenge and rebuilt itself with true Kiwi determination. The city is swathed in gorgeous parks, and it acts as the base for Antarctic expeditions from NZ, the US and Korea – so there’s plenty to see and do!

Where to visit on your Christchurch holiday
Whether you want adventure, natural scenery or something entirely different, Christchurch can provide the ultimate road trip itinerary.
Get closer to nature
Not only does the city have a zoo, it also has a wildlife park within easy driving distance from the CBD. That’s not to mention spotting nature in its own habitat, which you can do at Kaikoura just a couple of hours to the north, or at any one of the local Garden City nature trails, such as the Banks Peninsula Track.
See the scenery
Speaking of Banks Peninsula, the drive along this spit of land is simply stunning, offering unique elevated views of Christchurch and surrounds, as well as fascinating mountain vistas as you close in on the small French settlement of Akaroa. There are also numerous beaches to soak up on your road trip, such as Sumner and New Brighton. Don’t leave without a few pictures of Hagley Park, either – the massive central green area at the heart of the city, where the Botanical Gardens are also located.
Go on an adventure
Wine tours, thrill rides and more can all be found around the local Canterbury area. You can ski at Mount Hutt, taste local vino in the Waipara Valley, learn all about the local culture in the South Island’s only replica Maori village and so much more. Chances are, if it’s a road trip experience you want, you’ll be able to get it here in Christchurch.
