Free & Cheap Activities to do in Christchurch
We get it, travelling’s expensive. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun even if you’re at the end of your stay and budgeting has become a priority. If you’re planning to wind up in Christchurch during any stage of your trip, then you’ll have no shortage of free or cheap activities to keep from burning holes in your wallet.
Here’s the top 10:
1. Free festivals and events
Plan your trip right and you may just be in Christchurch during one of their many free events and festivals that occur year-round. Check out this Christchurch event calendar to see what’s on while you’re there.
2. Air Force Museum of New Zealand
Lovers of aviation and military history will enjoy walking amongst the historic fleet of planes on display at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand – better yet, it’s completely free.
3. Sumner beach
Grab a rental vehicle at Ace Rental Cars and drive out to the nearby suburb of Sumner Beach. Here you’ll be able to walk across the sand and straight into the many caves that dot the rocky outcrop breaking up the beach.
4. Imagination Station
This one’s a true saviour for all exhausted parents. If your little angels aren’t being quite so angelic anymore, take them to the Central Library where the folks at the Imagination Station will let them play with Lego for free!
5. Free gigs
Who doesn’t love free live music? Go on, I’ll wait. Settle in for a night at the Darkroom on St Asaph Street to have a few drinks while enjoying the free gigs every night from Wednesday to Saturday.
6. Bridle Path hike
Sure, you could take the Christchurch Gondola to the peak of Mount Cavendish, but that involves money. No thanks. Do your calorie count and bank account a favour and tackle the three-hour return hike up the Bridle Path.
7. New Brighton beaches
These beaches are popular during the warmer months for surfing and sunbathing. Otherwise, it’s worth strolling to the end of Brighton Pier to stare wistfully out at the horizon and ponder life’s mysteries.
8. Canterbury Museum
Immerse yourself in New Zealand’s history and art while learning about its natural landscape at the Canterbury Museum. Learning’s always better when it’s free.
9. Brockworth Street Art
If you’re after more of a modern, urban art gallery, then head to Brockworth Street to discover an impressive art gallery where the canvas is brick and cement.
